JIM MALCOLM: Getting Started Shooting VR

This workshop is a one-day, get to see how its done style workshop.

Jim Malcolm is a pioneer in the business of creating Virtual Reality content. In this one-day class, he will cover many of the salient questions you have, and by the end of the day, you will have had the opportunity to work with VR cameras and create a short narrative – then view the story in a VR headset.

The class will cover:

  • Types of new media opportunities including VR, AR and Mixed Reality.
  • Explore levels of immersion, what it means to photographers and why it’s important.
  • What are these headsets really made of?
  • Priniples of shooting for a VR headset, decisions you need to make before you take your first shot.
  • The equipment landscape; from $700 to $95,000; we’ll explain the differences.
  • Understanding the Software, it starts with stitching.
  • Getting started on a budget, what your clients are willing to pay for.
  • What’s important when evaluating VR Content
  • Rumars and missconceptions of virtual reality
  • Where’s the money?

Experience with video editing is helpful but not needed for this class

NOTE:  A 1:45 hour Seminar Primer will be held by Jim Malcolm on Wednesday afternoon, May 9th from 2:45 – 3:30pm.  This is not required for members of the workshop class. Registrants of this workshop benefit from a $50 discount to the seminar.

Jim Malcolm is Humaneyes’ General Manager of North America, responsible for managing the launch and success of their Vuze VR Camera, the company’s 3D-360 degree VR system. With more than 25 years of experience in imaging and virtual reality (VR) markets, Jim is the current president of the leading trade association, The Imaging Alliance, the former president and CMO of Ricoh Imaging Americas Corporation, and has more than a decade of leadership roles at Sony Electronics. Jim is often quoted by industry press and has spoken at top imaging and consumer electronics trade shows including CES, Summit.Live, PhotoPlus and others.

Jim brings more than two decades of imaging, virtual reality (VR) and consumer products experience to his role as General Manager, North America, at Humaneyes. In addition to establishing the business operations of the company in North America, Jim is responsible for managing the launch and success of their Vuze VR Camera, the company’s 3D-360 degree VR solution.
